Cray-Cyber.org acquires two Cray J90 supercomputers
Begin of 2004, Cray-Cyber.org was able to acquire two Cray J90
supercomputers. A J932 was bought from Deutscher Wetterdienst (German
Wheather Service). The machine is equipped with 32 vector CPUs,
reaching a theoretical performance of 6.4 GFLOPs. The
Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung (Institute
for meteorology and climate research) of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe donated a
J916. With 16 vector CPUs, this machine reaches a theoretical maximum
at 3.2 GFLOPs. The machines came with disk subsystems and lots of
documentation. Both systems were used for weather forecast and climate
calculations
Cray-Cyber.org currently
installs both machines for testing purposes. Only one machine will go
online in the future. The other one will be used for spare parts.
Cray-Cyber.org is a subproject of
GFHR e. V. The association has it's main focus on restoring and
running ancient computer systems and preserve related knowledge in
forms of documentation, hardware and software. Find more information
